Opportunity Knocks

Opportunity Knocking

Knock, Knock! Who’s there? Opportunity.

What do you do when opportunity knocks? Do you dive into the abyss of opportunity without knowing the depth? Quite possibly, you would rather know the expectations and boundaries before making a commitment. Here are a few basic questions to test the waters before you open the door to opportunity:

  1. Does it make sense? This is basic common sense. If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Make sure you are thinking about things realistically, and take your time before jumping into anything.
  2. What’s the worst that could happen? Review the opportunity from the perspective of Murphy’s Law. If it can go wrong, it will go wrong. Then ask yourself if you can handle the consequences.
  3. What are my options? Review all of you options, and it may be in your best interest to wait. There’s no sense in hurrying life along.
  4. Am I ready for this? Examine the opportunity, and realistically ask yourself if you are prepared. The preparation could be physically, mentally, emotionally, or financially. Would you run a full marathon without the months of training before the big event? Then why would you proceed with an opportunity without being fully prepared.

When is the best time to make a decision? Give yourself a deadline, and if you have not made a decision on the opportunity it is probably best to wait for the next one.

A wise man once said: “To succeed, jump as quickly at opportunities as you do at conclusions. “ Benjamin Franklin, one of our many great forefathers, always had such great advice.
